Alexander Zverev returned to action for the first time since suffering a serious injury at the French Open when he appeared at the Diriyah Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The German former world No 2 tore his ankle ligaments in a horrific fall against Rafael Nadal in June.
Zverev, 25, limbered up at the exhibition event with a first-round win over Dominic Thiem in a match played as the best-of-three first-to-10 tie-breaks.
He then took on Russian world No 7 Daniil Medvedev and fell to a 6-4 6-0 defeat.
British No 1 Cameron Norrie overcame Wimbledon runner-up Nick Kyrgios 10-6 10-6 in round one and then beat top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
