World number 35 Tommy Paul and 89th place Ben Shelton faced off in the men's singles quarterfinal match played on the 10th day of the tournament held in Melbourne.
At the end of the fight, which lasted 3 hours and 6 minutes, Paul defeated his compatriot 3-1 with sets of 7-6, 6-3, 5-7 and 6-4.
Paul's opponent, who made it to the grand slam semi-finals for the first time in his career, will be the winner of Andrey Rublev (5)-Novak Djokovic (4).
