British pair Harriet Dart and Katie Boulter maintained their hopes of reaching the main draw of the French Open with victories in the first round of qualifying.

Dart, who played in the first round of the tournament last year, got off to a good start with a 6-3 4-6 6-4 success over Katrina Scott of the United States.

British number three Boulter, who has never previously qualified for Paris, also survived the loss of the second set to defeat Italy’s Nuria Brancaccio 6-2 4-6 6-4.

But Heather Watson’s hopes of returning to the main draw were dashed by her 6-4 6-3 defeat to Serbia’s Olga Danilovic, while fellow Britons Yuriko Miyazaki and Katie Swan also lost.

In the men’s qualifying, Liam Broady beat Arthur Gea 4-6 6-4 6-3, while Jan Choinski also advanced after opponent Nicolas Kicker retired with Choinski leading 2-6 6-3 2-0.
