Wagner early favourite for Australia role
Former Borussia Dortmund, Huddersfield and Norwich manager David Wagner is the early favourite to take over as manager of Australia, Sky Sports News has been told.Graham Arnold has resigned from the role after a disappointing start to qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which included a 1-0 home defeat to Bahrain.
Wagner was sacked by Norwich a day after their play-off semi-final defeat to Leeds in May, despite leading them to a sixth-placed Championship finish.
Under Arnold, Australia reached the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup, losing to the eventual champions Argentina in the last 16. But since then, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals for the Asia Cup earlier this year despite being tipped as one of the pre-tournament favourites.
"I said after our game against Indonesia that I had some decisions to make, and after deep reflection, my gut has told me it's time for change," Arnold said in a statement.
"I've made the decision to resign based upon what’s best for the nation, the players and Football Australia."
