In Game 2 of the World Series, Framber Valdez delivered to help the Houston Astros tie things up after a tough loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 1.
If he can repeat his Game 2 performance in Game 6 on Saturday night, the Astros will put the bow on an incredible season with their second World Series title.
Last night in Game 5, Justin Verlander finally ticked off the big remaining empty spot on his glittering MLB resume, getting his first World Series win as Houston moved within a win of glory.
The Astros responded as well as possible after falling behind 1-0 and 2-1 in the series, and Game 6 odds favor them to finish things off in front of their home fans. But the Phillies have been fighting hard all postseason, and they will have their best arm on the mound in Game 6.
The last time the Astros were in this position, they were in position to clinch at home against the Washington Nationals after three wins in D.C.
That time, they failed to hold a lead in both Game 6 and Game 7, as they lost all of their home games and the 2019 World Series in stunning fashion, ending a 107-win season empty-handed.

The Phillies have been better against LHP this season, but they couldn’t manage much against Valdez in Game 2, as he allowed just one run, four hits, and three walks and struck out nine in 6.1 innings in Houston’s 5-2 win.
While Valdez was outstanding in Game 2, Wheeler struggled, allowing five runs (four earned), six hits, and three walks in five innings.
While the Astros have gotten good starts from Valdez (Game 2), Cristian Javier (Game 4), and Verlander (Game 5), the Phillies have gotten just one good performance from a starter in the World Series, with Ranger Suarez pitching five shutout innings in their Game 3 shutout win.
They can’t afford that in Game 6 if they want to force a Game 7, so Wheeler will have to produce like he did in Game 1 at St. Louis (6.1 shutout innings) and Game 1 at San Diego (seven shutout innings), especially with Valdez pitching well in the postseason.
The Phillies certainly can’t be written off, and they have a win at Minute Maid Park already in the series. But after coming up big on back-to-back nights in tense situations in a hostile environment, I think tomorrow night will be a crowning night for the Astros.
There has not been a one-run game in a World Series title-clincher since the Cubs’ 8-7, 10-inning, drought-ending Game 7 win against Cleveland in 2016. I’m going to back that trend to continue here in a title-winning triumph for Houston.
